The New York Mets have recalled Daisuke Matsuzaka from AAA and have demoted John Lannan off of the 40 man roster.
Matsuzaka has been recalled to pitch out of the bullpen for the big club despite being a starting pitcher for his entire big league career; Dice-K does have one career relief appearance which came in 2011 as a member of the Boston Red Sox. He has pitched twelve innings in two starts for the Mets AAA affiliate in Las Vegas, putting up a 2.25 ERA. Matsuzaka, who is now 33 years old, is a veteran of seven big league seasons after spending the beginning of his professional baseball career in Japan, has posted a career 4.52 ERA and a 1.409 WHIP in 707.0 innings pitched at the Major League level.
Although the Mets have announced that Matsuzaka will be a reliever for the club it does seem interesting that the move coincides with reports that Bartolo Colon has a back issue. If Colon were to have to miss a start it seems like a good assumption that Matsuzaka would make the spot start in his place.
Lannan has struggled in the bullpen this year making this an easy decision for the Mets. He has posted a 15.75 ERA this year out of the bullpen, with a 2.250 WHIP, allowing 7 hits in only 4 innings as a Met. He made the Mets out of Spring training to be the team’s second left hander out of the bullpen, but he failed to be effective in that role. Lannan will have option to report to AAA Las Vegas or become a free agent.
