Mc's Pick 3/30 - 4/5: Mets' Opening Day at Citi Field

Who, What, Where, When: Washington Nationals vs. New York Mets, 2014 Opening Day, Monday March 31. Citi Field, Flushing,NY, 1:10pm. Mets tickets.

Baseball returns to New York City this week when the New York Mets host the Washington Nationals this afternoon at 1:10. The division rivals will kick the season off t Citi Field as starting pitchers Dillion Gee and Stephen Strasburg get the call for the Mets and Nats, respectively.

The Nationals enter the season with high expectations coming off of a season last year where they failed to qualify for the postseason despite being a trendy pick to compete for a World Series title. They come in with similar expectations this year. They boast a very talented roster headlined by young stars Strasburg and Bryce Harper.

The Mets enter the season with much lower expectations; although their general manager Sandy Alderson did proclaim that his Mets should win 90 games this season. Dillon Gee had a good second half to the season last year but he is not the Mets first choice to start today’s matchup. Injuries to Matt Harvey last season and Jon Niese during the Spring have necessitated Gee getting the ball this afternoon.

Opening Day is a day for optimism for baseball fans. Hopefully the Mets can provide their fan base with something to be optimistic about all summer long.
