Credit to Arthur Staple of Newsday for breaking the news. Vanek was the captain of the Sabres and had totaled 9 points (4G/5A) this season. He has had good success in the playoffs and brings true 1st line talent that the Isles may not have had other than John Tavares. One knock that the media has always had on Vanek is that he is very streaky and sometimes doesn’t give full effort. He is set to be an unrestricted free agent at the end of the season. Moulson had 9 points this season (6G/3A) including a league-leading 5 power play goals.
Vanek is incredibly talented and will certainly bring offensive prowess to the top line but the Islanders can ill afford to have anyone not giving full effort every night. If Vanek can stay emotionally vested into the season then he and Tavares should pack a lethal 1-2 punch. However, I don’t think the Islanders are in the position that Vanek makes them a true Stanley Cup contender so giving up a 1st and 2nd round pick in addition to a proven scorer could be far too much should Vanek not resign.
