The end of an era may be coming soon. It was reported that rookie quarterback Geno Smith has been outplaying once-golden boy Mark Sanchez in training camp, which will make it tough for Rex Ryan and new GM John Idzik to make a decision on who to start.

On Wednesday, Sanchez completed 3-of-10 passes, with a touchdown and an interception—not exactly starting-quality numbers. Geno Smith, on the other hand, completed most of his passes, going 5-for-6, but was sacked twice, an indication that he’s still holding onto the ball for too long.

The rookie has shown he is a quick study, showing improvement from the OTAs. He still has a long way to go, but Smith has been making good reads, and showing awareness. At the pace Smith’s going, and if Sanchez keeps playing like Sanchez, the rookie may dethrone the embattled quarterback sooner than we expected.

It’s Geno Smith’s battle to lose. All the rookie has to do is carry this momentum into the preseason and play well, and we Jets fans will be looking at the new starting quarterback.

Can he win the starting job?
