The Good: Health, kind of. The single biggest reason for the Giants struggles on defense last season was injuries to their secondary. Now as the team gets ready to enter training camp the Giants seemingly have a healthy stable of defensive backs for the first time, in a long time. If the Giants can keep their defensive backs on the field this season we should see the group perform much better than they did last season. Look for Corey Webster to bounce back from an abysmal season at corner last season in which he allowed a eye opening eight touchdowns in coverage – the most in the NFL amongst cornerbacks who see at least 75% of their teams defensive snaps.
The Not so Good: Health. How can health be a strength and a weakness you ask? Well, we cannot assume that the Giants defensive backs are going to get hurt, however, if they do, things could get ugly real fast. While the G-Men have a talented roster of defensive backs, there are a lot of questions surrounding the unit, most of which have to do with health. If at any point the Giants do suffer significant losses to their secondary the depth that looks good on paper right now will get thin really fast.
Players to watch: Prince Amukamara, Corey Webster, Terrell Thomas. Defensive back may be the most intriguing position for the Giants as they enter training camp. The talent is there, but so many questions remain. Can Prince Amukamara take the next step and become the consistant first round pick the Giants are hoping they got? Can Corey Webster return to form after a terrible 2012 season? Remember Terrell Thomas? Well he’s coming back from his third ACL surgery. The odds are obviously not is Thomas’s favor, however, if the former star CB can stay on the field it should provide the Giants with much needed depth at the position. Look for Thomas to get a few looks at Safety for the Giants during camp as well.
