The Yankees started well but they just couldn’t close out the game and that means that they will be starting off their second half with a series loss to arch rivals, The Boston Red Sox.
The Yankees opened up the scoring in the first when Brett Gardner scored on a throwing error by Jarrod Saltalamachia, which also allowed Ichiro Suzuki to reach third. The Yankees extended their lead in the first when Vernon Wells singled to left to bring home a quick Ichiro and to give the Yankees a 2-0 lead.
The Yankees tagged on another run in the second when Robinson Cano singled to center to bring home Chris Stewart and extend the Yankee lead to seven.
The Red Sox were out yet as they got back one run when Dustin Pedroia singled to left to bring home Jacoby Ellsbury and to cut the lead to 3-1 Yankees. With Pedroia and Ortiz on base, Mike Napoli launched a bomb left field to score all three of them and to give the Red Sox their first lead of the game at 4-3.
The Red Sox weren’t done there as in the fourth inning Shane Victorino singled to left to bring home Jose Iglesias and Stephen Drew to make it 6-3 to the Red Sox.
The Red Sox extended their lead farther when Jonny Gomes homered to left to make it 7-3 to Boston.
The Yankees showed resiliency though and fought back with their rally starting in the sixth inning when Brett Gardner singled to left to bring home Eduardo Nunez and to cut the lead to three runs. Later in the inning, the Yankees cut the lead to two runs when Cano singled to bring home Chris Stewart.
The Yankees got back into the groove in the next inning as well, as Chris Stewart hit an infield single, but thanks to throwing error by SS, Jose Iglesias, Vernon Wells was able to score from 3B and cut the lead to one. The Yankees levelled things up when Luis Cruz grounded out but was able to get Eduardo Nunez in to score.
It was not meant to be in the end for the Yankees as Mike Napoli stepped to the plate once again in the 11th inning and launched his second bomb of the game to send the Yankees to Texas with a series loss to open up their second half.
The Yankees will now play a four game set against the Texas Rangers beginning on July 22nd at 7:00 ET where a red hot Ivan Nova will be going up against Yu Darvish.
