Recap: Yankees down Twins 2-0

In a game affected by rain, the Yankees managed to escape with a 2-0 win and take the first game of the three game set. Initially against Scott Diamond, the Yankees had no success, some would argue that the rain delay helped because in the fifth inning the Yankees snuck ahead. The scoring started with Luis Cruz on second, Brett Gardner hit a single between third base and shortstop, and thanks to some excellent base running, managed to get Luis Cruz home to give the Yankees a 1-0 lead (Gardner advances to second on throw). Robinson Cano continued the scoring for the Yankees in the next AB as he too singled but this time to center field, with Gardner’s speed, he managed to get home and extend the Yankees lead to 2-0. It would stay that way the whole night.

The Twins had no luck against Hiroki Kuroda and the Yankee bullpen as they pitched a shutout game and only allowed Minnesota to get 8 hits while committing no errors in the field.

Kuroda’s start was cut off thanks to the rain delay but he finished with this stat line: 5.0 IP, 6 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 2 BB, 5 K’s (90 pitches, 52 strikes) to earn himself his eight win of the season. The Yankee bullpen also got in going last night with Preston Claiborne managing to get out a jam in the sixth, Boone Logan striking out the side in the seventh without allowing a hit, Robertson cruising with 2 K’s and no hits, and Mariano Rivera coming in, in the ninth to get his 30th save of the season.

Some of the notable performances from this game were Lyle Overbay (2-3, 1 BB), Robinson Cano (1-2, 1 RBI, 2 BB), Brett Gardner (1-3, 1 RBI, 1 BB), Hiroki Kuroda (5.0 IP, 6 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 2 BB, 5 K’s, 90 pitches, 52 strikes), and Boone Logan (1.0 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 3 K, 17 pitches, 10 strikes. These guys were all key to the Yankees success in last nights win and had to keep their composure in difficult situations for the Yankees to walk away with the win.

The Yankees and Twins will go head to head in the second game of the three game set on the 13th of July at 1:05 PM ET where the pitching matchup will be Phil Hughes vs Samuel Deduno.
