It look like there may already be a division inside of the New York Jets Quarterback ranks after it was announced on Thursday that Geno Smith would not be attending Mark Sanchez’s annual “Jets West” players only mini-camp.
When asked last month whether or not he would attend the Sanchez-organized mini-camp, Smith answered “no comment”, leading many to speculate that the rookie quarterback, who will be looking to unseat Sanchez as the teams starter when the Jets break camp in August, would not attend. Smith later back peddled a bit on his seemingly strong stance, answering “sure, sure” when asked a second time.
Instead of attending Sanchez’s chemistry-building camp for the Jets’ offensive players, Smith is working out in Florida.
“We haven’t talked about it, but from my understanding it’s something that’s done annually and all the guys go out there and it’s been a great experience,” Smith said. “Mark hasn’t officially extended the hand to me, but I’m pretty sure there’s no problem there. I’m more than willing to go there.”
Sanchez previously had said that every player is invited to the camp. A spokesperson for the camp said there are several offensive skill players in attendance.
