Donning some pretty sweet All Star gear, Captains Robinson Cano and David Wright made their picks Monday night for the All-Star Home Run Derby.
Representing the American League Cano chose Prince Fielder from the Detroit Tigers and Baltimore’s Chris Davis before announcing his final pick was still undecided.
Cano said he will wait until the All-Star rosters are finalized before he makes his final pick. Miguel Cabrera, Edwin Encarnacion and Adam Dunn follow Davis on the American League home run leaderboard.
Wright, representing the National League, selected Washington’s Bryce Harper and Colorado teammates Carlos Gonzalez and Michael Cuddyer. After being told that Phillies fans were angry about their young outfielder Dominic Brown not being selected, Wright said “I’m sure there’s a lot of people that are disappointed.” As if David Wright is going to do the Phillies and their fan base any favors.
Wright went on to say, “I did it as easy as I knew possible. At the time when they needed to know who I was picking, I took the National League home run leader. I took the guy that won the fan poll — the guy who the fans really wanted to see in the Home Run Derby. So you have CarGo and Bryce Harper. And that left me with the ‘Ryder Cup captain’s pick.’
“I grew up with Michael. I think that he’s one of the more underrated players in the game. And, obviously, the friendship had something to do with it. And his production had a lot to do with it. You’re talking about a guy that’s got 15 or 16 homers. He had a 27-game hitting streak. For me, that was my choice.”
The Homerun derby will take place Monday, July 15 at Citi Field.
