New York Yankees Captain Derek Jeter says he’s getting close to being able to begin playing minor league rehab games.
Jeter, who is expected to rejoin the Yankees after the All Star break, ran the bases for the first time Wednesday since a second break was found in his surgically repaired left ankle on April 18th.
Jeter originally injured the ankle in the opening game of last years AL championship series.
Jeter’s return would provide a huge lift to a Yankees lineup that continues to tread water in a very closely contested AL East.
The Yankees also received good news on Thursday when it was announced that Jeter’s backup, Eduardo Nunez was close to rejoining the club. Nunez has been rehabbing with AA Trenton has been out since May 12 after suffering a strained oblique.
