The terms of the deal are yet unknown, but the extension will keep the reigning Sixth Man of the Year with the club for a few more years. When the deal is official, it will mean the Knicks will have their top five players under contract next season.
Openings for shooting guard jobs were getting slim, so the Knicks had to make some moves, and re-signing Smith was one the Knicks’ top priorities. J.R. Smith, who is coming off his best year as a pro; averaging a career best 18.1 points last season coming off the bench, wanted to test the free agency market to see what he could get, and he did generate some interest from Houston and Dallas, but Smith prefers to stay with his home town team, but may hold off on signing anything with the Knicks for the next few days to see if he can get any last minute offers from a different team.
