New York Yankees drop Subway Series Opener to the New York Mets 2-1

The New York Yankees were defeated by the New York Mets by the score of 2-1 on Monday night.  It was game one of the 2013 Subway Series at Citi Field in Flushing, New York.  This year they are playing four games in a row with two in each stadium.  It is a change from the past when they have been playing six games with three in each stadium.  Phil Hughes and Jon Niese were the starters and they both pitched well.  David Robertson was not good in relief for the Yankees and the offense was bad on both sides.  The Yankees left the bases loaded and second and third and the Mets offense came from David Wright and Daniel Murphy.

Hughes pitched seven innings giving up four hits and a run with six strikeouts.  Robertson pitched 2/3 of an inning giving up two hits and a run with a walk and a strikeout, Boone Logan struck out the only batter that he faced.

Brett Gardner had a hit, Jayson Nix had two hits and an RBI and Robinson Cano had a hit.  Vernon Wells had a hit, David Adams had a hit and Ichiro Suzuki had a hit and drew a walk.  Lyle Overbay had a hit and drew a walk, Chris Stewart had a hit and Gardner hit a triple.  The Yankees were 1-3 with runners in scoring position and left seven men on base.  Stewart had a passed ball.

Niese pitched seven innings giving up eight hits and a run with a walk and four strikeouts.  Brandon Lyon picked up his second win of the season pitching an inning and giving up a hit and Bobby Parnell picked up his eighth save of the season pitching an inning giving up a walk and striking out two.

Murphy had a hit and an RBI, Wright had two hits and an RBI and Mike Baxter had a hit.  Niese had two hits, Jordany Valdespin drew a walk and Baxter hit a double, Wright hit a triple and a homerun.  The Mets were 1-4 with runners in scoring position and left five men on base.

In the sixth Nix hit an RBI single giving the Yankees a 1-0 lead.  In the seventh Wright tied the game at one with a solo homerun and in the eighth Murphy hit an RBI single to give the Mets a 2-1 lead which would be the final score.

The Yankees have now lost two games in a row and their record fell to 30-20.  The Mets record improved to 19-29.  The two teams will play their second game of two at Citi Field on Tuesday night and then play two more games at Yankee Stadium on Wednesday and Thursday.
