The New York Mets defeated the St. Louis Cardinals by the score of 5-2 on Thursday afternoon. The game took place at Busch Stadium in St. Louis, Missouri. Jon Niese started for the Mets and pitched well. The bullpen also pitched well and Daniel Murphy led the offense with a four hit day.
Niese pitched 7 1/3 innings giving up six hits and two runs with two walks and three strikeouts. Niese won his third game of the season. Brandon Lyon pitched 2/3 of an inning giving up a hit and Bobby Parnell pitched an inning giving up a hit and striking out one to save his fourth game of the season.
Jordany Valdespin had a hit, Murphy had four hits, an RBI and drew a walk and David Wright had two hits and two RBI. Lucas Duda had a hit, an RBI and drew a walk, John Buck had a hit and an RBI and Rick Ankiel had a hit. Ruben Tejada had a hit, Murphy, Wright, Ankiel and Duda each hit a double. The Mets were 4-10 with runners in scoring position and left eight men on base. Duda was caught stealing.
Adam Wainwright took his third loss of the season pitching six innings and giving up six hits and four runs with three of them being earned. He walked one and struck out eight batters. Randy Choate pitched 2/3 of an inning giving up two hits and a walk with a strikeout, Salas pitched 1 1/3 innings giving up two hits and a run with a strikeout and Kelly pitched an inning giving up a hit and striking out one.
Matt Carpenter had a hit and drew a walk, Robinson drew a walk and Carlos Beltran had three hits and an RBI. Yadier Molina had a hit, Adams had a hit and Pete Kozma had a hit and an RBI. Wainwright had a hit, Beltran, Kozma and Carpenter each hit a double. The Cardinals were 2-7 with runners in scoring position and left six men on base. Beltran and Robinson each committed an error.
In the second Kozma hit an RBI double to give the Cardinals a 1-0 lead. In the third Murphy hit an RBI double to tie the game at one and Wright hit an RBI single to give them a 2-1 lead. In the sixth Wright hit an RBI double and Duda hit a sacrifice fly to make it 4-1 Mets. Buck hit an RBI single in the eighth to make it 5-1. The Cardinals scored a run in the eighth on a Beltran RBI single to make it 5-2 and that would be the final score.
The Mets record improved to 15-23 and the Cardinals record fell to 26-14 on the season. The Mets will begin a three game series with the Chicago Cubs on Friday afternoon.
