New York Islanders Put Rick DiPietro on Waivers

Arthur Staples was the first to report that the Islanders would be waiving Rick DiPietro and it has now been made official.

For those of you who may have forgotten, DiPietro is signed for another 8 years at $4.5 million dollars per year. When the contract ends in 2021 DiPietro will be turning 40 years old. This all but guarantees that DiPietro will clear waivers without a problem.

If his contract didn’t guarantee that he would clear, his 4.10 goals against average and .855 save percentage solidify it.

Between DiPietro and Tim Thomas, the Islanders have $9.5 in cap space tied up in two goalies that will not be playing for the NHL team.

For the Islanders’ sake, I hope DiPietro can stay healthy and work his way back to form because they really have a good thing going with John Tavares and Matt Moulson.

Kevin Poulinis expected to be recalled. Poulin is 15-13-3 with a 3.16 GAA and a .906 SV% for Bridgeport this season.

Remind me again, why did the Isles sign Thomas? I remember when DiPietro was the next big thing, I wish things had gone better/he’d stayed healthy.

Good question! I think all Islanders fans are wondering the same thing, unfortunately!
