Brooklyn’s win streak is now over after losing in disappointing fashion to Atlanta 109-95. Nets’ guard Joe Johnson faced his old team for the first time since he was traded, and things certainly didn’t go to plan, as the 31-year-old had an off shooting night (4-15 FG, 15 pts). Josh Smith missed the game due to a suspension, making the Hawks’ win even more impressive.
Atlanta Hawks’ president of basketball operations and general manager Danny Ferry announced Wednesday morning that the team has suspended forward Josh Smith for one game and fined him an undisclosed amount for conduct detrimental to the team.
Brook Lopez started strong for the Nets, though it was the guard combination for the Hawks of Jeff Teague and Devin Harris (16 points combined) which put them in front after the first quarter.
Atlanta extended the lead during the second quarter and at the half was in total control of the game. The Nets fought back late, but a 26-point deficit was far too much to overcome.
Lopez was Brooklyn’s best (22 pts, 9 reb, 10-14 FG), while Teague (28 pts, 11 ast, 12-18 FG) starred in the important win for the Hawks.
These two teams face each other again on Friday night, this time at the Barclays Center. Josh Smith returns for Atlanta, as they’ll look to make it two from two against the Nets.
